While the concept of taxing marijuana is a new one for most people to consider it actually has a long history. The very first federal law dealing with (pun intended) marijuana was the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937. Earlier laws outlawing “narcotics” had left out marijuana (or in the spelling more common at the time “marihuana”) so this was a more specific law dealing only with cannabis (and hemp). It ostensibly levied a tax on marijuana which was widely used in medical products of the day. The tax was pretty low (the base rate for a doctor was one dollar for.

—A California man has been ordered to spend five years in federal prison for his role in a nationwide marijuana-distribution ring that included sending the drug to Illinois. A federal judge in East St. Louis sentenced 32-year-old Trevor Bertlesman of San Anselmo Calif. Bertlesman pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy to distribute marijuana with 13 other defendants convicted in the scheme.

“The massive operation that began in February has already seized about 318000 marijuana plants worth an estimated $1. 1 billion officials announced last week. In addition to 82 arrests the multi-jurisdictional federal state and local operation netted 42 pounds of processed marijuana more than $40000 in cash 25 weapons and three vehicles. “Mexican drug trafficking organizations have been operating on public lands to cultivate marijuana with serious consequences for the environment and public safety” said Gil Kerlikowske chief of the White House’s ffice of National Drug Control Policy at a briefing on the investigation.

There are marijuana capsules and snacks made with cannabis butter such as rice crispy treats. Co-owner Jill Leigh urges customers to try a syrupy tincture she calls “the Advil of medical marijuana. ” A drop under the tongue gives less of a high but the same pain relief as smoking she says. Leigh’s sales are legal — and taxed — under Colorado’s voter-approved medical marijuana law. Her marijuana dispensary and nearly 60 others serve a rapidly growing number of users with little oversight.
