(AP) — Rhode Island would be the third state in the nation and the first on the East Coast to allow nonprofit stores to sell marijuana to medical patients under legislation approved Tuesday by state lawmakers. The state Senate voted 30-2 to adopt a measure permitting three stores to sell marijuana to more than 680 patients registered with the state Department of Health. It now heads to Gov. Don Carcieri who has previously vetoed bills legalizing marijuana for medical use. "It takes away all the negativity that the cancer is putting upon you" she said. "The only con is it’s illegal and if you’re buying it off the street it’s a dangerous thing to do. Alcohol is the most widely chosen drug in our culture but marijuana use remains a real threat on our roadways. Unfortunately we hear so many students say that they will not place themselves in a car with a drunk driver yet we rarely hear them say that they will not enter a car with one who has smoked marijuana. Marijuana will impair reflexes. Why is this not addressed to the extent that drunk driving is? Parents educators and the programs offered in schools should focus more on this issue.
