Beckles 36 of Clifton Heights was convicted March 19 of two counts of possession with intent to deliver marijuana within 1000 feet of a school triggering a mandatory minimum sentence of two years on each count. Deputy District Attorney Katayoun Copeland argued that they should run consecutively and Delaware County Court Judge Barry Dozor agreed. During his trial Beckles denied police statements that he told officers he had sold drugs to Correll Buckhalter a former Eagle and Keita Crespina a former Temple University and Philadelphia Soul football player.

Ex-Jaguar pleads not guilty to drug charges

(AP) — Former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jimmy Smith pleaded not guilty to several charges Thursday including possession of cocaine and marijuana. Smith 40 also pleaded not guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license. A fifth charge possessing or selling a controlled substance was dropped. Smith did not attend the arraignment at Duval County Courthouse. He was represented in court by his attorney Hank Coxe who did not comment on the case after the hearing.

Medical marijuana backers are preparing to try to put a constitutional amendment _ ensuring the right of the sick and dying to smoke marijuana _ on the state ballot next year. If backers can persaude the Legislature _ a big if _ to put the measure on the ballot a statewide campaign won’t come cheap. However the Marijuana Policy Project a national group pushing the legislation appears to have the money to launch a serious campaign. Since 2005 the group has spent nearly $900000 lobbying the Minnesota Legislature with money raised at events like its recent fourth annual Playboy Mansion fundraiser.

In the infant business of medical marijuana the sweet smell is spreading. Success however remains elusive. More than a dozen states have approved the use of pot with a prescription and similar legislation is under review by the Illinois General Assembly where the state Senate voted Wednesday to approve a measure. Although the federal government outlaws the cultivation possession and sale of the drug it has indicated that state rules will prevail.
