Teenagers did not catch swine flu by sharing celebratory bong hits because they were too busy texting their friends while their parents lectured them about sexting. And Kellogg’s always concerned with projecting a healthy image for America’s youth extended its contract with Toucan Sam to endorse Froot Loops. Phelps meanwhile can go back to the cover of Sports Illustrated instead of the cover of High Times. r at least I hope so.

But turning America into a Sin City on a Hill could help President bama pay for his ambitious plans to overhaul health care and invest in green energy. More taxed vices would certainly lead to significant new revenue streams at every level. That’s one of the reasons 52 percent of voters in a recent Zogby poll said they support legalizing taxing and regulating the growth and sale of marijuana. Similar cases could be made for prostitution and all forms of gambling. In terms of economic stimulation and growth legalization would end black markets that generate huge amounts of what economists call “deadweight losses” or activity that doesn’t contribute to increased productivity. Rather than spending precious time and resources avoiding the law (or same thing paying the law off) producers and consumers could more easily get on with business and the huge benefits of working and playing in plain sight. Consider prostitution.

Marijuana compound fights brain cancer: Study
Examiner.com
Guillermo Velasco and a team of researchers at Complutense University in Spain have shown that the psycho-active chemical in marijuana delta-9-tetrahydrocannibinol (THC) encourages brain cancer cells to begin a process called autophagy in which the cell basically dissolves itself. The team noted that cannabinoids such as THC showed cancer-fighting effects in mice implanted with human brain cancer cells and in human patients with brain tumors. When mice implanted with human brain cancer cells that received the THC showed significant reduction of tumor growth. Two patients enrolled in a clinical trial received THC directly to the brain as an experimental treatment for recurrent glioblastoma multiforme a highly aggressive brain tumor.
Medical marijuana is ‘nightmare’ for some
Escanaba Daily Press
“The problem with these new laws is they are not fully understood” Racine said. “It’s going to be a nightmare for law enforcement because there are so many loopholes. “Racine said the confusion may cause officers to get to the point where they may not enforce what law is left regarding marijuana for fear of litigation. “People said this would be like a small step towards the complete legalization of marijuana. This is more like a major jump towards legalizing it” he said. Racine also said there is not a lot of talk about some of the negative side effects or the fact he said that marijuana is a gateway drug. “Not every person who smokes marijuana becomes a crack smoker or a heroin user but every person who does the hard stuff started with marijuana” he explained.

It’s time to have good debate on legal marijuana
Arizona Daily Star
To be clear we are not advocating for legalized marijuana. However given the toll the illegal marijuana trade takes on the nation ? and Southern Arizona in particular ? it’s time for a serious discussion on the possible benefits of regulating and taxing marijuana much like the government does alcohol. The Arizona Medical Marijuana Act initiative drive which was launched last week is limited in scope. Howard Fischer reported in Friday’s Star that the measure if it makes the 2010 ballot and is approved by voters would give people who are prescribed marijuana and test positive for the drug at work the anti-discrimination protections available to women and minorities.
