us Digg This akland city councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan said that the proposed tax rate increase for medical cannabis could bring in “a couple million” in revenue to the city — far more than the $200000 to $400000 that was cited in the agenda report. Kaplan an at-large councilwoman and one of three co-sponsors of the proposal said the agenda report used 2007 numbers from the four licensed medical cannabis dispensaries in akland as a basis for its estimates. But since then a few things have changed — the dispensaries say that business grew substantially in 2008 and three weeks ago U. Attorney General Eric Holder said that the federal government would not prosecute medical marijuana dispensaries or users as long as state laws allowed for use of the drug.

Currently 13 states including California Colorado Maine Michigan Rhode Island and Vermont allow the medical use marijuana with a doctor’s approval or certification. And although possession of the drug remains illegal under federal law U. Jodi Rell indicated Monday that she opposes the decriminalization of marijuana a contentious issue that could come up for a committee vote in the General Assembly as soon as today. Some Democratic legislators have been pushing hard this year for the decriminalization of less than an ounce of marijuana and Rell had not previously voiced a public view on the bill.
