The farmers appealed, hoping for a ruling that hemp “is not subject to regulation by the DEA and that our farmers aren’t going to be charged with a crime,” says Tim Purdon, a Bismarck lawyer who represents the farmers. “It’s really frustrating for these farmers to look across the border and see Canadian farmers growing it and making a living from it,” he says. The district judge should not have dismissed the case without hearing evidence about the differences between hemp and marijuana, adds Washington lawyer Joe Sandler, who will argue the farmers’ case before the appeals court. The lawsuit is funded by Vote Hemp, a Washington lobbying group that seeks to legalize hemp farming. The group has spent about $100,000 on the lawsuit, says spokesman Adam Eidinger. Five Oroville residents face federal marijuana charges

In addition, Jones, Renshaw, Eric Sills and Raymond Sills were indicted on the charge of using a firearm for a drug trafficking crime, which carries a minimum penalty of five years imprisonment with a possible punishment of life in prison. The charges followed a investigation by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office after several individuals reported they had been robbed by people posing as law enforcement officials in the past month. The thefts were all of marijuana, which was being grown by those possessing medical marijuana cards. The suspects allegedly told residents that they were law enforcement officials and were conducting a drug raid. They detained and handcuffed the individuals and stole the marijuana plants in the home. Jones and Eric Sills and Raymond Sills were arrested Oct. 28 in connection with the robberies on state charges.
Border Patrol Agents Discover Marijuana in Abandoned Surfboard

, Border Patrol agents and California Park and Recreation officers were following foot traffic along the beach near the international border fence when they came across an abandoned blue surfboard. Further inspection of the board revealed that it had been hollowed out and glued back together after being stuffed with marijuana.

Brian Dye, 33, of 1603 34th St. NE, remained in the Stark County Jail Friday, held on charges of illegal cultivation, trafficking and possession of marijuana, jail records said. His ex-wife, accused of driving her pickup truck toward a group of state, local and federal agents who were dismantling the operation at his home, also had been arrested.

In 2006, the total number of drug seizures increased to 639, compared to 596 seizures in 2005. Cannabis accounted for the vast majority of all seizures 432 seizures. In 2006, there were 29 cannabis plant seizures, 61 cocaine seizures (double that of 2005) but a decrease in seizure of marijuana from 181 kilos in 2005 to only 35 kilos in 2006.
