Privately-educated Mr Herbert, an electronics engineer, was on his motorbike with his head “in a racing driver’s position” and did not notice a Renault van heading straight for him, an inquest heard. Gloucestershire coroner Alan Crickmore said British drivers often forgot to switch lanes on foreign holidays, but added that this incident was “exacerbated” by Mr Herbert’s intake of Indian Hemp. Recording a verdict of accidental death, Mr Crickmore said: “One of the features of this case is the presence of the active ingredient in cannabis found his blood after his death. I’m satisfied from the evidence that within 48 hours of the road traffic accident Mr Herbert had consumed cannabis. “I’m satisfied from the case I’ve heard, from my general knowledge and the evidence of Dr McCarthy that the most likely effect on Mr Herbert of the cannabis was the distortion of perception. “It is not unusual for British drivers in France to find themselves on the wrong side of the road, and to turn in the wrong direction, forgetting for a moment they are in France and should be on the right rather than the left. I’ve heard it many times.
