Morocco destroys 2736 hectares of cannabis

26 (Xinhua) — Morocco, a big cannabis-producing nation, has recently destroyed 2,736 hectares of cannabis in the northern region of Taounate, 250 km east of Rabat, local MAP news agency reported on Tuesday. Quoting local authorities, the report said two tons of the drug, locally known as chira, were seized in the house of a rural commune representative in this region, notorious for its vast cannabis-growing lands. Authorities also seized two electric engines used for irrigating cannabis-growing lands, it added. The operation started in early May and lasted till Aug. 24, the report said.

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors decided during the closed session of its weekly meeting to once again take up the case, this time before the state supreme court, according to Jodi Miller, a spokeswoman with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's department. The board took the step “at the urging of the Sheriff in his capacity as the county's chief law enforcement and public safety official,” according to county spokesman David Wert. The counties have argued that the medical marijuana program violates federal law and the state constitution. Federal law lists marijuana as a dangerous narcotic with no medical use.
