Authorities were alerted about the Cannabis shipment, which had recently arrived from the city of Dammam in the Eastern Province after receiving an anonymous “tip off”. The source revealed to the Anti-Narcotics Department that a group of individuals would be arriving at King Khaled International Airport with a very large shipment of Cannabis. The Drug traffickers had planed on storing the drugs in a safe location before distributing the illegal substance all across the Kingdom. Asharq Al-Awsat has also learned that the drug traffickers were Pakistani in origin, and had smuggled the drugs from Pakistan to the kingdom by way of the United Arab Emirates. Earlier this month a Saudi official told Asharq Al-Awsat that that drug smuggling, especially cannabis, from Iraq into Saudi Arabia has increased and that the Drug trade was financing militants fighting the Iraqi and multinational armies and facilitating the illegal entry of men into the country.

Mauritius not largest drug consumer in Africa
AngolaPress – Mar 24, 2008
Answering a question from an MP, Ramgoolam specified that this
report only gives statistics for Mauritius concerning opiates and
cannabis, but not for cocaine and amphetamines. “It contains no figure concerning the abuse of two other
categories of drugs, namely cocaine and amphetamines. Therefore, the figures for opiates and cannabis alone cannot be
considered as proof that Mauritius tops Africa and holds third
place in the world when it comes drug consumption,” he explained. Moreover, Ramgoolam said the Mauritian government was committed
to “mercilessly fight” against drug in the island.
Backlog of bills causing problems in Parliament
Stuff.co.nz – Mar 24, 2008
The backlog of bills is also causing wider problems for the Greens preventing them getting a new MP into Parliament. Every second Wednesday Parliament deals with legislation put up by MPs dealing with their issues or those of local government and private interests. In recent years members' night has been the focus of intense political interest dealing with issues such as prostitution and child discipline. Now an unusual set of circumstances has created a backlog of bills which means few will get debated let alone have a chance to pass into law or be rejected by MPs before the election.
