Why? The electorate of Colorado voted to allow the medicinal use of cannabis by a vote of 53 to 47 percent. Many patients who have needlessly suffered from these conditions were allowed to exercise their own course of care outside the realm of analgesics, NSAIDs, narcotics and other means the institutional medical field may prescribe. All Rights Reserved… The ages range from 18 to 90 and the average age is 43. For those who are unable to grow their own they may choose to access their medicine from a caregiver. Patients may have no more than two ounces of useable marijuana, they may grow up to six plants of which three or fewer can be flowering. The state of Colorado maintains a confidential database of patients and caregivers. The state will only verify that a patient is on the registry when approached by law enforcement officials. The application process is streamlined and cards must be renewed annually. A MD or OD must fill out the forms stating the diagnosis for the need and recommend that the use of cannabis is a legitimate medicine for these conditions.

Cannabis: a lung cancer risk
abc.net.au - Feb 21, 2008
On one hand, as far as illicit drugs are concerned, most experts agree that it’s far less harmful than heroin and ice. If smoked occasionally in small amounts, it’s fairly harmless – so the argument goes. If smoked frequently, though, it’s a different mater. It has been linked to an increased risk of psychosis in people who are already predisposed to psychosis… It also causes respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis. And there’s a suspicion that it may cause lung cancer – but that’s never been conclusively proven. The link between cannabis and lung cancer has been strengthened by New Zealand researchers, who say heavy cannabis smokers have six times the risk of lung cancer compared to non-smokers. Researchers from the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand looked at 79 lung cancer patients aged 55 years or less, and questioned them about their exposure to various risk factors for lung cancer, including tobacco and cannabis. After taking into account that cannabis smokers are often tobacco smokers as well, they found the rates of lung cancer were much higher in those who smoked cannabis than in non-smokers. Those who smoked more than one cannabis cigarette a day for 10 years, or two a day for five years, were about six times more likely to develop lung cancer than those who didn’t smoke cannabis at all. Every year of smoking a joint a day raised the risk an additional eight per cent.

US cop finds huge marijuana haul in senior citizen’s car: police
Turkish Press - Feb 21, 2008

According to chief of police Rice, the officer was struck by the strong odors emanating from the bag. A canine unit was called in “and when the dog hit on it, we opened the bag and thought, oh wow,” said Rice. Inside the two bags were several bales of marijuana, each weighing around 25 pounds (11 kilograms), Rice said. The haul, which has an estimated street value of around 1. 3 million dollars, was one of the biggest in Maryland, Rice said. One of the eight bales seized in the bust was marked with the number 1 and another with the number 286. “There are a lot of bales missing,” Rice said.
