Governor again turns down limited hemp farming bill
San Francisco Chronicle – Oct 11, 2007
Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed a hemp farming bill for the second time. The Republican governor announced Thursday that he had turned down a measure by Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, that would have authorized a five-year program under which farmers in four counties — Imperial, Kings, Mendocino and Yolo — could grow hemp in plots of up to five acres. Hemp is a distant cousin of marijuana but contains only traces of THC, the drug that gives marijuana its intoxicating effect. It’s legal to grow hemp in more than 30 countries, and the plant can be imported into the United States and used in a wide variety of products, including food and clothing. But it can’t be grown legally in the U. without a nearly impossible-to-obtain permit from the U… Leno came back with a narrower measure after Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill last year that would have allowed any California farmer to grow hemp. But the governor still cited the federal restrictions in his veto message. “Under federal law, all cannabis plants, regardless of variety or THC content, are simply considered to be ‘marijuana,’ which is a federally regulated controlled substance,” he said, adding that failure to get a permit to grow it could lead to criminal charges. ___On the Net:and.
Cannabis drivers’ drug of choice
New Zealand Herald – Oct 11, 2007
While a similar proportion of the group reported driving under the influence of cannabis (21 per cent) or alcohol (27. 2 per cent) per year, the frequency of driving under the influence of cannabis was far higher. Those questioned reported driving under the influence of cannabis on an average of nine occasions between the ages of 21 and 25. The average rate for drink-driving was 3. And after adjusting for other factors, those driving while on cannabis on more than 20 occasions in a given year had 1. 4 times more car accidents than those who did not… The average rate for drink-driving was 3. And after adjusting for other factors, those driving while on cannabis on more than 20 occasions in a given year had 1. 4 times more car accidents than those who did not. For alcohol, the results suggested only a small increased risk. Professor Fergusson said the net effects were that for the group of young people studied, cannabis posed a greater risk than drink-driving. He pointed out, however, that the accidents were relatively minor and for the most part did not involve injury, and as cannabis use was highest among young adults, the results of the study may only be specific to that age group.
Marijuana activists rally in downtown LA, want end to raids
San Diego Union Tribune – Oct 11, 2007
October 11, 2007
LOS ANGELES – About 200 people on Thursday protested federal raids on cannabis clinics and urged Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to compel the Bush administration to back off. The rally outside the Ronald Reagan State Office Building in downtown lasted more than an hour as medical marijuana activists called for an end to the raids they called illegal and intrusive… “Los Angeles is where we’re going to win the war for safe access in California. ”
In 1996, California voters approved Proposition 215, which legalized the sale and use marijuana for medicinal purposes, but the drug is still considered illegal under federal law. Opponents of medical marijuana believe the dispensaries attract crime and make it easier for people, not just those with serious illnesses, to gain access to the drug. Steph Sherer, executive director of Americans for Safe Access, a pro-medical marijuana group, said Schwarzenegger should coordinate with the 12 other governors whose states have legalized medical marijuana to send a message to Washington. “We are tired of coming and protesting about our medicine,” Sherer said.

As a mum gives cannabis to her children, God save us from these dopey…
Daily Mail – UK – Oct 11, 2007
Did Nicola Cooper have any idea how very stupid she wasbeing?Smoking cannabis more than doubles your risk of psychoticillnesses such as schizophrenia. Immense damage can be done to the growing brains of childrenwhen they smoke the high strength cannabis available today. In their defence, Nicola Cooper and her husband calledthemselves ‘liberal parents’. Liberal with what – danger? Surely it is better to be liberalwith security, good sense and love, than liberal with drugs. The word liberal today seems to excuse all manner of perniciousbehaviour… On the same basis, you could give your child a gun to preventthem getting mixed up with gun dealers. But no sane parent would give their children guns. I confessthat I used to have relaxed views about cannabis, thinking it not alot worse than alcohol. Cannabis destroys lives much faster thanalcohol. I have seen friends of my children virtually wiped out bycannabis in a couple of years. One clever child I know is only just getting herself back ontrack after years of cannabis abuse.
