Reclassification of cannabis ‘fuels youth crime wave’
The Independent – Independent – Sep 16, 2007
A national survey of Youth Offending Teams indicates that two-thirds of them have seen an increase in cannabis use of between 25 per cent and 75 per cent since David Blunkett, the then Home Secretary, downgraded the drug to class C in 2004. Some 90 per cent of all young offenders are using cannabis in some areas, a far greater proportion than the general youth population. Research carried out by King’s College London has indicated that 25 per cent of young offenders in Sheffield have turned to crime to fund their habit. This contrasts with previous government research which said that “cannabis use was unlikely to motivate crime”. A rise in young people smoking cannabis openly has led to a rise in the fear of crime in the community, leading Sheffield’s police chief to warn of the threat that cannabis poses to the “fabric of society”. Fifty out of 51 of the youth courts in England and Wales are so alarmed that they have written to Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, urging an upgrading of cannabis back to class B.
Marijuana Ingredient May Prevent Mad Cow Disease

The infectious agent in prion diseases is believed to be a specific
type of misfolded protein called prion. Misfolded prion proteins
carry the disease between individuals and cause deterioration of
the brain. The French researchers reported that the non-
psychoactive cannabis constituent CBD inhibited the
accumulation of prion proteins in both mouse and sheep prion-
infected cells, whereas other cannabinoids were either weak or
not effective. Moreover, after infection with mouse scrapie, a
prion disease, CBD limited accumulation of the prion protein in
the brain and significantly increased the survival time of infected
mice. CBD inhibited the nerve damaging effects of prions in a
concentration-dependent manner. Researchers noted that CBD
may be a promising agent for the treatment of prion diseases. (Source: Dirikoc S, Priola SA, Marella M, Zsuerger N, Chabry

They were also a smuggling brotherhood, sailing boatloads of Thai sticks down to the northern coast of Australia. The business would prove so lucrative that, in 1988, a 180-foot oil-rig tender would strike out for California with a highly trained, uniformed crew and laden with 8,250 bales of primo cannabis – 72 tons of the stuff. The evolution of the dope trade from happy-go-lucky amateurs to highly sophisticated professionals is the tale behind "Reefer Men", subtitled "The Rise and Fall of a Billionaire Drugs Ring". Author Tony Thompson has already written two books on Britain's criminal gangs and he approaches this one with relish. "By the early eighties, the Superstar was virtually synonymous with the entire Thai marijuana trade. The bar's owners were hardly in a position to object," Thompson writes… In short order, he turned into a perverse sort of Peace Corps volunteer, advising local farmers on how to improve their new cash crop: marijuana. "Not only did Daniels guarantee the farmers a market, he also helped introduce new seed stock, advanced fertilisers, and better methods of irrigation," Thompson writes. He also tackled a perennial problem in marijuana smuggling: the great bulk of the product and susceptibility to mould on long sea voyages. "He adapted a trash compactor to squash the drugs down to a more manageable size, which meant that more marijuana could fit into a much smaller space. He also introduced vacuum-packaging machines that squeezed out even more air, reducing the space ever further and significantly delaying the onset of moulding. " Finally, to ensure officials and police who encountered his shipments would be assured of the proper bribes, he designed his own logo: a blue eagle above a line of bold red type that read: "PASSED INSPECTION". Daniels' most successful partners were the Shaffer brothers, Chris a yacht captain and Bill a former Green Beret.
