Raids net more than 6,500 marijuana plants in Eastern Washington
Seattle Times - Aug 30, 2007
75 million have been seized and 12 people have been arrested in raids in Grant, Kittitas and Yakima counties, officials said. Four months of surveillance led to the operations Tuesday by about 60 personnel from 11 law enforcement agencies, the latest in a series of raids on marijuana operations around the state at what is typically the peak of the pot harvest. Earlier this month nearly 10,000 marijuana plants were seized and two people arrested in an early morning raid on the Colville Indian Reservation. Less than halfway through the month nearly 80,000 pot plants had been seized in coordinated searches and raids in Yakima, Klickitat, Benton and Skamania counties, including 40,000 plants in a closed area of the Yakama Indian Reservation. In one of the largest raids Tuesday, more than 4,000 marijuana plants worth an estimated $1,500 each were found growing in five spots in a wooded area northeast of Kittitas toward Whiskey Dick Mountain. Investigators also used a helicopter to find more than 2,500 marijuana plants with the same value in the lower Crab Creek area outside Beverly and about eight miles north of Mattawa in Grant County. In a search of five homes in the Mattawa area, investigators found several pounds of processed marijuana awaiting packaging, nearly five pounds of cocaine with an estimated value of $20,000, a pound of methamphetamine valued at $14,000 and more than $135,000 in cash, according a news release from the Grant County sheriff’s office… Earlier this month nearly 10,000 marijuana plants were seized and two people arrested in an early morning raid on the Colville Indian Reservation. In some of the homes, marijuana was hanging and drying in children’s bedrooms, deputies wrote. Twelve people were arrested and jailed in Grant County for investigation of charges involving possession, distribution and manufacture of illegal drugs.
Medical marijuana user found guilty
Denver Post - Aug 30, 2007
That doesn’t sit well with his mother, who seethed outside of an Adams County District courtroom after jurors Wednesday convicted her son - 39-year-old Jack Branson - of cultivation of marijuana, a felony. “I saw a child abuser last week get convicted of the same class of felony as my son, and that child abuser is a danger to this community,” said Margaret Branson, who watched her son hobble down a hallway using a cane. “You tell me,” she said, “how is this possible?” But the nine-woman, three-man panel also cleared her son of a second felony charge of possession of more than 8 ounces of marijuana. The decision to acquit on one marijuana charge and convict on another was “irrational,” said Branson’s attorney, Robert Corry… “I saw a child abuser last week get convicted of the same class of felony as my son, and that child abuser is a danger to this community,” said Margaret Branson, who watched her son hobble down a hallway using a cane. “You tell me,” she said, “how is this possible?” But the nine-woman, three-man panel also cleared her son of a second felony charge of possession of more than 8 ounces of marijuana. The decision to acquit on one marijuana charge and convict on another was “irrational,” said Branson’s attorney, Robert Corry. He asked Adams County District Judge Thomas Ensor to overturn the guilty verdict. Ensor refused and sentenced Branson to one year of unsupervised probation. He faced six years in prison. The verdict will be appealed, said Corry, adding jurors seemingly reached a puzzling compromise.

Medical Marijuana: Drug bust sparks questions over law
Santa Fe New Mexican - Aug 30, 2007
Bill Richardson, said authorities targeting a paraplegic man suffering from a spinal cord injury is “a policy without compassion. ”
“As long as Mr. French was within the limits of the medical marijuana state law, we urge the (Drug Enforcement Administration) not to prosecute him,” Oliver said late Tuesday. attorneys have their hands full with real drug cases and border violations, and can’t afford to waste taxpayer dollars to prosecute individuals who are critically ill or suffering from debilitating conditions. ”
The task force stated in a news release that agents did not know French had state permission to use marijuana until after the raid… Deborah Busemeyer, a spokeswoman for the New Mexico Department of Health, confirmed that officers called the agency after the raid to verify the man’s state-issued marijuana identification card. Each card has the department’s telephone number and a special code. “This is a sad story because we want patients who need medical marijuana to have it,” she said. “A lot of these people have chronic pain and other illnesses, and this is their only relief. ”
A state law that took effect this summer allows the use of marijuana for pain or other symptoms of debilitating illnesses such as cancer, glaucoma, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, HIV-AIDS and certain spinal cord injuries. The department has been certifying patients as eligible to possess marijuana. That protects the individuals from state prosecution, but leaves them to find their own supply of marijuana — potentially growing it themselves or obtaining it from friends or drug dealers.
