The marijuana plants started sprouting at Abashiri Prison onJapan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido about a year ago, saidprison official Takeshi Okamura. He said officials plucked out asmany as 300 marijuana plants and treated the ground last year, butseveral more sprouted again this year. Prisoners reported them to the guards. Officials believe the plants are wild. “Apparently, somebody knew how to tell marijuana from otherplants,” Okamura said.

He was among 15 people arrested July 6, 2006, after authorities raided dispensaries nationwide. From 2005 until his arrest, Sullivan owned The Purple Bud Room and Tender Holistic Care, which distributed marijuana and marijuana-based products including ice cream and baked goods, federal officials said. Under the state's medical marijuana law, patients with a chronic illness can use the drug if a doctor recommends it. Sullivan was accused of selling to people with no apparent medical conditions and profiting from it. He also pleaded guilty to similar state charges and is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

Failed asylum seeker Ting Yen Cheng, 34, was arrested as he left the house in Kirkcaldy in February this year. The High Court in Edinburgh heard that more than 500 plants were later found by Fife Constabulary. Judge Lord Brailsford said he would recommend that Cheng, from China, be deported at the end of his jail sentence. Cheng said a man who had given him work in a takeaway restaurant had asked him to look after the house.
