Marijuana groves can spell serious trouble
ESPN – Aug 27, 2007
The rotor wash from the swirling blades of the helicopter began to press down the brush. As the overstory manzanita branches parted, suddenly swaths of bright green understory plants materialized, and strewn all over the ground was a spiderweb pattern of black plastic pipes — “the drip irrigation system,” the leader explained. Knowing what to look for, we now saw marijuana and drip irrigation pipe everywhere as the team below was cutting the plants to be carried out by the helicopter. “Using the helicopter to come in scares away the people tending the gardens,” the team leader admitted, but that was not all that bad. Near this site two years ago, a California Fish and Game Warden was shot and seriously injured on such a bust. During the firefight one of the growers was killed… Venison jerky was found, along with deer carcasses. I also found a box of assault rifle ammunition. The pungent smell of marijuana filled the air as the team hacked away with bush knives. By the end of the day, another 20,000 plants were removed. “Last year we took out a record of 140,000 marijuana plants from this county,” the team leader told us. “This year, we have taken out 115,000 — and the season has just begun. An English study just reported 3 months on MSNBC, that the number 4th deadlist drug in the world is Ciagarettes… I am very disappointed to hear about this purposed initiative. Getting the drugs off of our streets needs to be a priority, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to think about the big picture. Marijuana is illegal for a reason. Our police need to be enforcing or laws to the best of their ability. This really should be the least of the problems that are in the city. Go after the child molesters and the gang members and all the people on the controlled substances.
