Cannabis drug plea for MS sufferers
East Anglian Daily Times – Aug 25, 2007
She said: “ It is disgraceful that otherwise law-abiding people are being forced to break the law by obtaining cannabis which, in many cases, is the only substance to relieve their multiple sclerosis symptoms, which can include bladder problems, spasticity of muscles, pain and sleep issues. “Yet again, the Government seems to be failing to distinguish between the medical and recreational use of cannabis. “If the Government would license Sativex, a cannabis-based drug recently developed by GW Pharmaceuticals, and made it easily available, then people with MS would not have to resort to using cannabis. ”Sanitex is licensed in Canada and can be imported through a complicated arrangement by doctors for individual patients, although this rarely happens. A Home Office spokesman said: “We will be asking the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs to review the classification of cannabis, given the increase in strength of some cannabis strains and their potential harms. “It would be wrong to prejudge that review which shows how seriously we take our priority of reducing drug related harm. “Our message has always been that cannabis is a harmful and illegal drug… A Home Office spokesman said: “We will be asking the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs to review the classification of cannabis, given the increase in strength of some cannabis strains and their potential harms. “It would be wrong to prejudge that review which shows how seriously we take our priority of reducing drug related harm. “Our message has always been that cannabis is a harmful and illegal drug. “Drug use, including cannabis, drug-related crime and drug-related harm have all fallen in recent years, but to tackle drugs in the most effective way we need to monitor and review the ways in which we reduce the harm caused by illegal substances. n Anyone wanting “open, unbiased information” about cannabis-use in relation to Multiple Sclerosis should contact the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre on 01206 505444.

In announcing an upcoming federal anti-drug campaign, Health Minister Tony Clement stated the obvious this week. "The messages young people have received during the past several years have been confusing and conflicting to say the least. " Clement specifically mentioned the on-off debate on marijuana: It "has left an entire generation confused over whether or not pot is legal. " He felt it necessary to remind his audience: "Ladies and gentlemen, it is not. "The young aren’t the only ones who appear confused. For the past three decades, Ottawa has moved back and forth on the pros and cons of decriminalizing marijuana possession (not legalizing the drug). For the past three decades, Ottawa has moved back and forth on the pros and cons of decriminalizing marijuana possession (not legalizing the drug). Canadians have long since made up their own minds on cannabis, weed, grass, pot, or whatever the name du jour. A clear majority has told pollsters time and again that the penalties for possession are too harsh. For a lot of Canadians, the debate is over: They like pot, they smoke it. In fact, Canadians aged between 15 and 64 have the highest rate of regular consumption in the industrialized world, at 16. 8 per cent, according to a United Nations report released last month.

) contract in 2005, which included a $37 million signing bonus. But it’s hardly the first time Vick has run afoul of public mores. In 2004, two men were arrested in Virginia with a pickup truck bed full of marijuana – the truck belonged to Vick, but he escaped prosecution by blaming it on the drivers. In 2005, he was sued by a woman who claimed she’d contracted genital herpes from him while he used the pseudonym "Ron Mexico. " He settled out of court. About a year later, he treated booing hometown fans to a double middle-finger salute. And in January 2007, he was caught at an airport with a water bottle that had a secret compartment that officials said smelled strongly of marijuana and contained a great deal of marijuana residue.
