The trooper learned that Garcia’s license had been suspended for refusing to submit to a breath test in early August, the arrest report said. Garcia then gave the trooper permission to search his car. Inside the car the trooper found green, leafy buds that smelled like marijuana on the driver’s seat, on the floorboard and in the center counsel. The trooper also found cigarette rolling papers and a stack of $20 and $100 bills in the car, authorities said. When the trooper opened the trunk, he found three large, black garbage bags that smelled of marijuana sealed with zip ties, the arrest report said. When he cut open one of the garbage bags, it contained several individually wrapped bags of marijuana. Garcia was arrested on the charges of possession of marijuana over 20 grams, marijuana possession with intent to sell, marijuana trafficking, driving with a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

DPS narcotics agents, working in coordination with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, said as many as 2,000 plants were being uprooted and destroyed in the three locations in a swampy area northwest of the Lone Star Park racetrack. Detectives were trying to determine whether these plants were linked to other marijuana fields discovered recently in southwest Dallas County.

Maestas’s roommate James Johnson, 49, was sentenced on June 4, 2007, on one felony count of possession of marijuana.
