Study: Marijuana may increase psychosis risk
USA Today - Jul 26, 2007
Doctors have long suspected a connection and say the latest findings underline the need to highlight marijuana’s long-term risks. The research, paid for by the British Health Department, is being published Friday in medical journal The Lancet. “The available evidence now suggests that cannabis is not as harmless as many people think,” said Dr. Stanley Zammit, one of the study’s authors and a lecturer in the department of psychological medicine at Cardiff University. The researchers said they couldn’t prove that marijuana use itself increases the risk of psychosis, a category of several disorders with schizophrenia being the most commonly known. There could be something else about marijuana users, “like their tendency to use other drugs or certain personality traits, that could be causing the psychoses,” Zammit said. Marijuana is the most frequently used illegal substance in many countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States.

DEA Raids LA Medical Marijuana Clinics

The bust netted five arrests, large quantities of marijuana and cash, and was the U. Drug Enforcement Administration’s second-largest since California voters approved medical marijuana sales in 1996. The drug remains illegal under federal law… Those arrested Wednesday included clinic owners and managers, though no patients, for investigation of marijuana distribution. Councilman Dennis Zine, who earlier in the day wrote a letter to DEA Administrator Karen Tandy asking the agency to stop the raids, called the federal agents “bullies. “Instead of using resources to go after drug dealers ruining neighborhoods and poisoning school kids, they’re going after individuals dying of cancer and suffering from AIDS who need cannabis to have any type of appetite,” Zine said. Riley called the vote "a really tough day" for backers of the medical marijuana legislation. "You can fool some of the people some of the time. And this medical marijuana has been one of those (issues) for the last few years," Riley said. "But I think that the hand is starting to get played out here," Riley added. "More and more people are realizing there is a con going on — that a lot of the people who are behind this aren’t really interested in sick people who need medicine, they’re interested in marijuana legalization and they’re playing on the suffering of genuinely sick people to get it. "Officials with the Marijuana Policy Project, which backs medical marijuana use, said evidence is mounting demonstrating its medical benefits. According to a search warrant affidavit filed in court, two police snipers seeking a perch during the 20-hour standoff broke into a neighboring house and discovered 50 or more 5-foot pot plants, a sophisticated exhaust system, ceiling-mounted movable growing lights designed to “simulate daylight” and processed marijuana in a freezer. The standoff began early July 18 as police tried to serve an arrest warrant on Matthew Ryan Hastings, 28. One of the officers was shot and wounded and another man in the house was held hostage. Hastings “stated that he was going to start shooting the hostage he had in a non-lethal location and then start cutting off body parts,” Vancouver police Detective Jeffrey Wilken wrote in the affidavit… , across the Columbia River, including two snipers who were authorized to force their way into a home next door without a warrant to gain a better vantage point. Based on a report of what they found, Wilken obtained the search warrant within hours after Hastings was arrested early July 19. Police would not say whether the owners of the home where the marijuana was found are believed to be linked to the operation, and police had not reported any arrests concerning it. Meanwhile, Hastings’ arraignment on six counts of attempted murder and one of unlawful possession of a firearm was postponed Wednesday until he can undergo a mental evaluation at Western State Hospital. In another development, Clark County sheriff’s deputies reported the discovery and destruction last week of more than 3,700 marijuana plants worth an estimated $750,000 in a remote forested area about a mile northeast of Green Mountain School and two miles south of Lake Merwin. The plants ranged in size from one to four feet high, and investigators were trying to determine who was responsible, sheriff’s Cmdr.

They tried to tell me that they were just playing strip poker, but I've been around and I've heard a lot of stuff over the years. I knew it was crap. "The agent went on to say that he also smelled marijuana and noticed something smoking in the ashtray. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this story plays out. Calls to the white house have gone unanswered. The story above is a satire or parody.
