Feds raid medical marijuana clinics in LA, irking local officials
San Diego Union Tribune – Jul 25, 2007
Drug Enforcement Administration agents raided 10 medical marijuana clinics Wednesday, the same day city leaders introduced a measure calling for an end to the federal government’s crackdown on the dispensaries. Federal officials arrested five people for investigation of marijuana distribution after serving clinics in and around the city’s Hollywood area with search warrants, said DEA spokeswoman Sarah Pullen. Those arrested included clinic owners and managers, though no patients. Large quantities of marijuana and cash also were seized… ”

“I think it’s more than a coincidence, the raids today,” he said. “They’re trying to bully us. Instead of using resources to go after drug dealers ruining neighborhoods and poisoning school kids, they’re going after individuals dying of cancer and suffering from AIDS who need cannabis to have any type of appetite. ”

The DEA has maintained the clinics are distribution points for illegal drugs and earn their owners big profits. Zine said he and the council support a bill proposed by U.

Burned Bodies Found Near California Marijuana Plantation
FOX News – Jul 25, 2007
— The burned bodies of two people were found Tuesday near an illicit plantation along the Eastern Sierra where 50,000 marijuana plants were found and five people were arrested, authorities said. The bodies appeared to have been burned in a wildfire that consumed some 35,000 acres of vegetation in the Inyo National Forest this month, Inyo County Sheriff Bill Lutze said. But the bodies’ location near the marijuana growing area, amid other undisclosed evidence, led authorities to believe they were involved in the drug operation, Lutze said. The bodies were found eight miles northwest of Independence, which is in Owens Valley, between the Sierra Nevada and the Inyo Mountains, about 225 miles north of Los Angeles. Authorities were led to the unidentified bodies by four men claiming to be family members who were looking for two missing relatives, he said. “They dropped them off apparently to go quote-unquote backpacking a few weeks ago,” Lutze said. “They were supposed to make contact within the first few days and hadn’t.

Local police and federal agents Tuesday chopped down and burned thousands of marijuana plants found growing at the Crabtree Nature Center Forest Preserve near suburban Barrington. The plants have an estimated street value of $5 to $10 million, according to Gary Olenkiewicz, special agent in charge for the federal Drug Enforcement Agency Chicago Field Division. Richard Waszak, Cook County Forest Preserve police chief, called the illegal farm “the most sophisticated operation that we’ve seen. Waszak said contraband crop was discovered when an intern doing research in the 1,600-acre park found men tending to an irrigation system and contacted forest preserve police. Investigators say that in addition to the marijuana fields, they also found camps with tents, cots and supplies, including food, a cooking area, shower area, and fertilizer bags.

Marijuana farm busted in South Yuba River park – Published 12:00 am PDT Wednesday, July 25, 2007PENN VALLEY — The South Yuba River State Park is known for its idyllic covered bridge, hiking trails, rugged canyons and as a great place for swimming. Apparently, a Mexican cartel armed with semi-automatic weapons thought it also was a great place to grow marijuana, park officials said. More than 20,000 marijuana plants were harvested this month from a large garden hidden inside the park, and on bordering Bureau of Land Management property, the state parks department announced. Park rangers worked with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Department, the state Department of Justice and BLM agents to harvest the marijuana from July 13-18. Sheriff’s deputies apprehended three people and discovered several semiautomatic weapons. Officials believe a Mexican cartel operated the garden.
