Cannabis factories ‘found weekly’
BBC News – Jul 22, 2007
Graeme Pearson, head of the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency, said more than 60 industrial-level cannabis farms had been raided in the last year. Mr Pearson revealed there had been virtually no major cannabis production in Scotland until 12 months ago. He said the illegal factories were being set up by organised crime gangs. Mr Pearson revealed there had been virtually no major cannabis production in Scotland until 12 months ago. He said the illegal factories were being set up by organised crime gangs. Mr Pearson said workers in the factories, which are often set up in residential areas, were frequently kept locked inside like slaves. The factories produced super-strength cannabis, which Mr Pearson said he believed was causing an increasing number of young people to suffer mental health problems. Recent estimates have suggested that about 60% of cannabis smoked in Britain is now home-produced, compared with only 11% a decade ago.

Decision on MS cannabis drug urged
Irish Times – Jul 22, 2007
It decided more clinical data was needed before the drug could be approved for treating muscle stiffness in MS patients. Professor Mike Barnes, consultant neurologist at the University of Newcastle and a trustee of the MS Trust charity, said: “This decision leaves many people with MS little option but to resort to ‘street’ cannabis for relief from the painful and disabling symptoms of their condition. “With Wednesday’s announcement by the Prime Minister that re-classification of ‘recreational’ cannabis is being considered, this is even more worrying. ” He said there was “compelling” evidence that Sativex helped a large proportion of people with MS. On average, half the patients who tried the drug gained some benefit and there were no concerns. Chris Jones, chief executive of the MS Trust, said: “It is a sad fact that the system imposes a ‘one size fits all’ model on a condition like MS. One size never fits all with MS – it is a hugely variable condition with variable responses to treatments.

Hemp helps Glamorgan extend lead
BBC News – Jul 22, 2007
Hemp was dropped at slip in the fourth over of the day and went on to score 97 as Glamorgan were bowled out for 298. Home skipper Simon Katich made 42 not out before declaring on 150-3 – 148 behind – hoping to ensure a result. Glamorgan reached 19-1 by the close but rain is forecast again for the final day – and could have the final say. Hemp, who played for Bermuda in this year’s World Cup, hit a six off Ant Botha and 14 fours in his fourth Championship fifty of the season but fell three short of his hundred after he edged Tom Lungley (3-67) to Michael Dighton at gully… Hemp was dropped at slip in the fourth over of the day and went on to score 97 as Glamorgan were bowled out for 298. Grand evasions hide in trifling honesties
Guardian Unlimited – Jul 22, 2007
Traces, in the habitual user, can linger for weeks. But, as the initial fug lifts, the effect of the drug-smoking admissions of the Home Secretary and eight of her colleagues are becoming clear. Moves towards raising cannabis from class C will be futile, as demonstrated by the abandon with which ministers took the drug when it bore the class B status that some now want to reinstate. The absurdity does not stop there. In other ways, the cannabis confessions have been a psychedelic experience. People who look as if they never took anything more mind-altering than Vimto have declared their sin. At one point the causal links between the Haight-Ashbury experience and the Gordon Brown cabinet seemed so solid that you would not have been surprised to hear that pensions policy was being formulated by the Grateful Dead… Moves towards raising cannabis from class C will be futile, as demonstrated by the abandon with which ministers took the drug when it bore the class B status that some now want to reinstate. More encouragingly for the government, the mental hologram of John Hutton inhaling a damp spliff may be as powerful a deterrent to the young as a picture of Giant Haystacks on a dieter’s fridge door. Already, since the downward reclassification in 2004, the proportion of cannabis users has dropped from 11 to 8 per cent.

Mainer convicted of marijuana trafficking
Portland Press Herald – Jul 22, 2007
Both were granted immunity from prosecution. Cyr told the jury that when she lived with Pelletier, who uses a
wheelchair, his only source of legitimate income was a monthly
$550 Social Security check, but that he had stacks of cash
hidden around the house. She said he used cash proceeds from the marijuana operation to
make a partial payment on a house and buy personal watercraft,
an all-terrain vehicle, horses and real estate. Hafford, who is serving a 10-year federal sentence on a gun
charge, testified that he helped Pelletier smuggle and distribute
the drugs to customers in southern Maine. He told the jury that
Pelletier paid $1,000 a pound for the marijuana and sold it for
$2,400 to $2,800 a pound. Pelletier was one of six people indicted last year in connection
with the smuggling operation. Four of the others have yet to go to trial… She said he used cash proceeds from the marijuana operation to
