“It’s alright to use it as a food seasoning, but it should notbe fully legalised,” Kalla was quoted as saying by the Jakarta Postdaily. Kalla was commenting on a recent study by two Indonesianagencies dealing with drug abuse that recommended the governmentreview its policy to outlaw the use of marijuana for recreationalpurposes, the Post said. Many of dishes in Aceh province, where hemp plants are grown,such as mutton and beef curry are said to be laced with marijuanaseeds to give them a distinctive local flavour. A drug expert from the National Narcotics Agency reportedly saidIndonesia should follow the example of countries like theNetherlands, where marijuana is legal, because it is not as harmfulas people thought. Ratna Dwikora, the owner of an Acehnese food restaurant inJakarta, told the Kompas newspaper “marijuana is available in anyAcehnese kitchen just like coriander”. “Marijuana is a widely-accepted cooking spice there,” she toldthe newspaper. Indonesia imposes harsh penalties, including death, for narcoticoffences as the country faces a growing drug menace.

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) told supermarkets to withhold sales of S&B Assorted Chili Pepper last week following reports that the Hong Kong government found traces of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is a psychoactive substance found in cannabis. No cannabis seeds or THC were detected in the AVA’s investigation.
