Bratton’s suggestions are being used as a guideline for a proposed ordinance expected to be developed by March, city staffers told the council committee. Nearly 100 medical marijuana dispensaries currently operate in Los Angeles, according to Bratton’s report. Medical marijuana dispensaries are defined as “facilities that provide marijuana for medical purposes to patients or primary caregivers who have a related recommendation from a physician. “Ten years ago, 56 percent of California’s voters approved proposition 215, which says marijuana should be made available to people with medical problems, including nausea from cancer and AIDS treatments. In May, the county Board of Supervisors approved an ordinance regulating medical marijuana dispensaries in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County, including provisions on where the drug can be consumed. – Police on Tuesday arrested a man who they said was growing marijuana plants in plain sight in his backyard. Thomas Merrick is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a church, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana and cultivating marijuana. According to Key West police, a neighbor complained that Merrick, 67, was growing marijuana outside of his house on Washington Street. Aside from the confiscation of the illegal plants, Bataoil said they were also able to arrest suspected drug pushers.
