Nearly 100 medical marijuana dispensaries are operating in Los Angeles, according to Bratton’s report. In October, a city council committee agreed to a one-year moratorium on issuing permits for new dispensaries as city officials seek stricter operating regulations. Councilman Dennis Zine proposed the moratorium, saying too many dispensaries were operating in the city, oftentimes selling pot illegally to those without prescriptions.

Michael Karras, 38, was alleged to have had four slabs of a greenish matter in his flat when it was searched by officers of Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau late last week. If found guilty, he faces between five and 20 years in jail and between five and 15 strokes of the cane. Under the city-state’s tough drug laws, trafficking 500g of cannabis would be punishable by death. A Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said Mr Karras and his family in Australia were being provided consular assistance. Mr Karras’s mother, Irene, said she could not discuss the charges levelled against her son. "You need to respect my wishes as a mother," she said from her Adelaide home. "It’s a small community and I have to live here.

He said it was more than just the presence of the marijuana that gave police probable cause to seize the money. Kirby Stailey stopped the couple’s 1996 Chevrolet Suburban about 4 p. Monday for speeding on I-64 at the 63 mile-marker… Several minutes later, Trooper Brian LaRoche and his K-9, Justice, arrived to assist. While walking around the outside of the Chevrolet Suburban, Justice indicated the presence of narcotics. A search of the car revealed the suspected marijuana and $19,100 in cash. A portion of the cash was found in the wife’s purse and another portion was found in a suitcase in the rear cargo area. The money was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency.
