The four students — two Kenyan women, an Eritrean man and the Saudi national — were detained at their rented apartment in Cyberjaya town Saturday, the New Straits Times reported. All four were students at a nearby college and are aged from 18 to 22. Their identities were not disclosed. The students face death by hanging under Malaysia’s harsh anti-drug laws if found guilty.

The poll, commissioned by Drug Policy Education Group Inc. , a Fayetteville-based non-profit which promotes reforming the state’s marijuana laws, and conducted by Zogby International of Utica New York, found that 61 percent of respondents support reducing penalties for marijuana convictions. Thirty-six percent said they “strongly” support the reductions and another 25 percent said they “somewhat” support reducing the penalties. Thirteen percent said they somewhat oppose reducing the penalties and 22 percent said they would strongly oppose such a proposal.

“Lately Border Patrol has seen an increase in drug trafficking. Not only in New Mexico, where typically we have a lot of narcotics coming across the border, but also here in Texas, in Hudspeth and El Paso counties,” said Patrick Berry, Border Patrol agent. Berry said most of the busts are for cocaine and marijuana. This weekend agents made five separate seizures that totaled $933,408 in value, the largest of the five busts being $501,120 worth of cocaine hidden in a secret compartment beneath a pickup truck. Agents stopped the vehicle on Saturday on I-25, north of Las Cruces. On Sunday, using night vision cameras, border agents spotted nine people crossing the border on foot near Deming. Police had uncovered massive illegal hemp cultivation, valued at over Rs 5 crore, at Sarangia and Lendriya gram panchayats nestled within the deep forests of Phiringia reserve in Kandhamal district on Friday. Raising the issue through a special mention, Congress whip Satya Bhusan Sahu alleged that the brother of the minister was involved in the illegal and this should be inquired by the CBI. He said that in a pre-dawn raid, police had destroyed ganja crop over hundreds of acres. His party colleagues L B Mohapatra, Anup Sai and Debasis Patnaik also alleged that the kin of the minister are involved in these illegal activities. Alleging that ganja cultivation was going on for the last ten years in the minister’s constituency, Padmalochan Panda (Cong) said that Behera’s involvement in this cannot be ruled out.
