Wildlife the victim of growing Bay Area marijuana business
San Francisco Chronicle – Aug 27, 2006
“They start killing them, birds, deer, whatever comes in,” Ferry said. The outlaws kill them, he said, to keep wildlife from eating the crop. Timing is now critical because illegal marijuana gardens are near harvest, which occurs in California from Labor Day weekend through early October. Ferry runs Coe, California’s largest state park, located south of Mount Hamilton and a favorite site for the illegal gardens. He also worked for CAMP (Campaign Against Marijuana Planting) for three months last year, so he has seen hundreds of operations up close and personal. “We find ammo at every grove,” Ferry said. “At one camp (at Coe State Park), we found a four-point rack, blacktail deer that they poached… Timing is now critical because illegal marijuana gardens are near harvest, which occurs in California from Labor Day weekend through early October. At another camp, we found these two water lines, you know, black plastic pipe, coming out of a plastic-lined pond that ran two miles to the grove, and you know that creek has been damaged. ” In the Bay Area, the favorite site of illegal growers seems to be Santa Clara County, in the vicinity of Mount Hamilton and Mount Umunhum.

He called for help and covered the back door as two colleagues approached the front. Reyna invited the deputies inside. Already, Deputy Brian Sherman sniffed marijuana. "As soon as he opened the door, you could really smell it," Sherman said. Deputies found pot growing in the bedroom, bagged in the freezer, in Tupperware in the refrigerator and on three cookie sheets near the stove. Reyna told the deputies he had been drinking and smoking marijuana the night before. He said he thought he hit a mailbox on the way home… "As soon as he opened the door, you could really smell it," Sherman said. No sense of "There but for the grace of God go I. "In a similar vein, the president’s niece didn’t go to prison for years because of her drug offense. Neither did Al Gore’s son, for repeated marijuana offenses. If the law is not the same for everyone, it’s not law at all; it’s an elitist control mechanism. Regulation of business is often easy for big corporations to comply with, but oppressive and costly to small business. Yet such rules are repeatedly imposed while the rhetoric is that our government wants to promote small business. You have a strange view of personal responsibility… I doubt that even you would compare the dangers of heroin and cocaine to those of marijuana. Yet the more dangerous are those that meet the criteria of profitability for smugglers and dealers. Much is made of marijuana being a "gateway drug". If this is so, it’s because it’s classified among the more dangerous drugs. That means it’s produced, smuggled, and sold by the same unscrupulous people who have incentive to push the more dangerous drugs. This is an absurd policy, creating more addicts and more deaths. Giving this kid two years in prison for a joint’s worth of marijuana promotes harder drugs — hardly a gain for public safety.
