MPs: Scrap useless drug classification
The Independent – Independent – Jul 30, 2006
For example, class A drugs such as heroin and cocaine carry a maximum sentence of seven years in prison for possession and a life sentence for supply or intent to supply. Class B drugs carry a five-year sentence for possession or 14 years for supply. Class C drugs, which include anabolic steroids and cannabis, carry a two-year sentence with 14 years for supply. The classification of individual drugs can change over time if new evidence shows that they pose a greater or lesser risk to society. David Blunkett, the former home secretary, reclassified cannabis from a class B to a class C drug in January 2004 in response to advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. But his successor, Charles Clarke, came under huge pressure to move the drug back to class B status earlier this year when he was Home Secretary, following new medical evidence linking cannabis use to mental health problems. Experts have long argued that some drugs have been placed in “arbitrary” categories that do not reflect the truth about their harmful effects.

Willie: Dixie Chicks ‘Got a Raw Deal’
Washington Post – Jul 30, 2006
Nelson says the Dixie Chicks “got a raw deal” from a disapproving public following their criticism of President Bush. “I think the fact that they were overseas and onstage had a little bit to do with it because you’re speaking to other people about our business,” the 73-year-old country crooner said in an interview in this week’s Time magazine. Nelson recently launched his own XM Radio channel and published “The Tao of Willie,” in which he offers his philosophy on subjects ranging from marijuana to war. Bizarre George
Khaleej Times – Jul 30, 2006
In February, he was found slumped at the wheel of his Mercedes near Hyde Park Corner at 2am. A bleary-eyed George was woken by a police officer knocking on his car window. He was arrested and cautioned for possessing cannabis, and days later he was allegedly seen stalking the corridors of the Hilton Hotel on London’s Park Lane in the early hours of the morning, wearing a balaclava and looking for a man he had met earlier in a bar. He was escorted from the hotel when the occupant of the room he’d knocked on complained to security. And in April he drove into two parked cars while trying to leave a parking space in Hampstead. Neighbours saw him drive away in his Range Rover, hitting a third car as he left, although George later denied being drunk or under the influence of drugs. The singer laughed off the incidents, but behind his off-hand dismissals lies increasing concern among those who care about him that he is on self-destructive path… Friends who have ventured to express their concern have been viciously slapped down by George. When Sir Elton John said he was worried about the star and the ‘deep-rooted unhappiness in his life’, George wrote to a magazine to dismiss him as a gossip who hadn’t seen him for years. But why, if George is having such a great time, does he remain unable to get by without his daily ‘fix’ of marijuana? And why, given that he professes to be deeply in love with his Texan boyfriend of ten years, Kenny Goss, does he continue to sleep with total strangers with scant regard for his personal safety? According to George, his partner remains unfazed by his moonlight philandering. ‘Cruising has never been an issue between us,’ he says. Indeed, George claims to have cheated on his boyfriend with ‘hundreds’ of other men. Friends, however, say that Goss is simply powerless to do anything about the situation. ‘George will never stop cruising and Kenny knows that,’ said one.
