Marijuana Abuse Responds to Psychotherapy, Overall Is Hard to Treat
Newswise – Newswise (press release) – Jul 21, 2006
Marc Auriacombe of the Addiction Research Group at the Université Victor Segalen in Bordeaux, France, and colleagues analyzed results from studies of 1,267 people who received no or delayed intervention, motivational enhancement therapy (MET), family therapy, CBT or combinations of these for marijuana abuse or dependence. The researchers measured outcomes such as abstinence from marijuana (cannabis) use, improvements in family and social problems, other drug abuse and continuing treatment to assess the various approaches. “The six studies included in this review show that cannabis dependence is not easily treated by psychotherapies in outpatient settings,” the authors write. “Cognitive-behavioral therapy both in individual or group sessions and motivational enhancement in individual sessions has been demonstrated to be effective to reduce cannabis use. ”The review appears in the current issue of The Cochrane Library, a publication of The Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates medical research. Systematic reviews draw evidence-based conclusions about medical practice after considering both the content and quality of existing medical trials on a topic.

BVI Customs assist Anguilla law enforcement in marijuana seizure
Caribbean Net News – Jul 21, 2006
The customs officials from the BVI and its K-9 team were flown into Anguilla to provide extra staff to assist with the search. A container in the customs pound containing barrels of partially treated animal skins was opened and searches underneath the putrid smelling skins revealed that dozens of the barrels contained numerous packages of compressed cannabis, and officers recovered over 140 such packages. The total weight has not yet been confirmed but police say it is many hundreds of pounds and was believed destined for the streets of Anguilla, not just in transit. Police believe that this cannabis was to fill the void caused by recent activities of the Drug and Gun Task force, which has led to the discovery of over 1,000 plants in over 20 separate plantations in Anguilla in the last few weeks… A container in the customs pound containing barrels of partially treated animal skins was opened and searches underneath the putrid smelling skins revealed that dozens of the barrels contained numerous packages of compressed cannabis, and officers recovered over 140 such packages. Police believe that this cannabis was to fill the void caused by recent activities of the Drug and Gun Task force, which has led to the discovery of over 1,000 plants in over 20 separate plantations in Anguilla in the last few weeks. With high street values of over US$1,500 a pound, the find could well be the largest ever of cannabis in Anguilla. Police at once launched an investigation into both the Drugs importation and for the first time in Anguilla, the criminal proceeds of the offenders. Anguilla’s Superintendent of Police Rudolph Proctor said they need to be clear that this kind of crime will not be tolerated on the island and that those guilty of such matters can expect to be punished by imprisonment and loss of their assets. Anguilla’s police say a large team of CID, Police financial investigators and task force officers executed a warrant at a Rey Hill house and a 47 year old man was arrested and is currently in police custody while enquiries continue.
