UN: Worldwide Marijuana Use ‘Out of Control’
FOX News – Jun 26, 2006
agency said Monday. Antonio Maria Costa, executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, highlighted the marijuana problem at a news conference in releasing his office’s 2006 World Drug Report. Marijuana, also known as cannabis, is a danger because it contains THC, a banned substance, Costa said. While governments around the world generally have succeeded in containing use of heroin, cocaine and amphetamines, marijuana is a different story, Costa said. “It’s out of control in supply because it’s a weed; it grows everywhere. It’s out of control in demand because it’s erroneously considered a light drug,” he said. “But, and indeed, it is extremely problematic because of much-increased THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, content.

Peter Vurm, co-owner of Seagull, told NutraIngredients. com that it is now in 25 countries, of which the UK is one of the latest. Although the packaging contains the words ’sweet cannabis tea’, Vurm was clear to point out that that it contains no THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the chemical responsible for the psychotropic effects of marijuana. Harinder Kohli, commercial director of C-Ice in the UK, told NutraIngredients. com that the syrup is a natural immune enhancer and contains protein, omega oils, amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and minerals – in addition to the antioxidant properties of the black tea. For the last three months, members of the Milton Keynes Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Group have been drinking two 250ml servings of C-Ice each day. Kohli said that 69 to 75 per cent of participants have reported help with symptoms – although she said that some of this might be due to their expectations.

DrugScope: Charity surprised by UN chief’s cannabis remarks
Politics.co.uk – Jun 26, 2006
“The UK government, education system and charities have worked hard in recent years to ensure our young people are given factual information about the relative harms of drugs. International evidence is clear that cocaine and heroin cause much greater health and social harms than cannabis and it is misleading and irresponsible to suggest otherwise. Cannabis is a harmful substance but the greater harms caused by cocaine and heroin should not be downplayed. “European evidence shows that although stronger strains of cannabis are available than 20 years ago, there has not been a significant increase overall in the use of more potent forms of the drug. ”

Responding to other key issues raised by the report, Barnes continued:

“Although we should not be complacent, cocaine use in the UK has remained stable in recent years, with last year’s figures showing a slight drop to levels seen in 2000. “Opium production in Afghanistan continues to be a concern, but it would be unrealistic to expect a significant reduction in levels of production without improvements in the country’s infrastructure and better access to alternative sources of income or employment. ”
