Marijuana Does Not Raise Lung Cancer Risk
FOX News – May 23, 2006
So why isn’t smoking marijuana as dangerous as smoking cigarettes in terms of cancer risk? The answer isn’t clear, but the experts say it might have something to do with tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which is a chemical found in marijuana smoke. Cellular studies and even some studies in animal models suggest that THC has antitumor properties, either by encouraging the death of genetically damaged cells that can become cancerous or by restricting the development of the blood supply that feeds tumors, Tashkin tells WebMD. In a review of the research published last fall, University of Colorado molecular biologist Robert Melamede, PhD, concluded that the THC in cannabis seems to lessen the tumor-promoting properties of marijuana smoke. The nicotine in tobacco has been shown to inhibit the destruction of cancer-causing cells, Melamede tells WebMD. THC does not appear to do this and may even do the opposite. While there was a suggestion in the newly reported study that smoking marijuana is weakly protective against lung cancer, Tashkin says the very weak association was probably due to chance. Cancer risk among cigarette smokers was not influenced by whether or not they also smoked marijuana.

Tramlines seen to end marijuana production

Aside from facilitating the delivery of agricultural harvests from the farms to the market while preserving the quality of the produce, Navata added that the put up of tramlines could also preserve the environment. He said environmental destruction could be minimized since there is no need to cut trees or destroy the mountains to construct farm-to-market roads. He added that tramlines could also resolve the problem on marijuana plantation because farmers in remote places would be encouraged to plant vegetables instead of cultivating the illegal plant. The inaccessibility of some farmlands in Benguet from the main roads is said to be one of the factors why farmers resort to planting marijuana, saying these are easily transported. The department however said tramlines could only be established in areas where these are feasible. (May 23, 2006 issue)Write letter to the editor.

Cannabis Without Euphoria?
CounterPunch – May 23, 2006
Researchers affiliated with other drug companies presented papers and posters and audited the proceedings. For most the holy grail is a product that will exert the beneficial effects of cannabis without that bad side-effect known as "euphoria. " It so happened that on the next-to-last day of the ICRS meeting, Sanofi got approval to start selling its cannabinoid-receptor blocker in England as an anti-obesity pill.
