The US Food and Drug Administration announced on Friday that marijuana is not a legitimate medicine because there is no hard evidence to show its safety or effectiveness. But marijuana researchers argue political obstacles make it almost impossible to get such data. The FDA says it was responding to requests for an opinion on the drug’s medical worth by Mark Souder, the Indiana congressman who opposes marijuana in medicine as well as in foreign fields (see above). The FDA’s statement contradicts a 1999 report by the US Institute of Medicine (IOM) suggesting that marijuana had the potential to treat pain, nausea and anorexia. Since then 11 US states have legalised the medicinal use of marijuana, even though possession of the drug is still a federal crime… Medical marijuana suffers knock in US 29 April 2006 Magazine issue 2549 IT’S enough to make your head spin. Cannabis found at John Reid’s House
Guardian Unlimited - Apr 29, 2006
Police are to take no action over the discovery, made during a routine security sweep of the property. The amount was described as “minuscule”, weighing less than one gram with a street value of 85p. Sources close to Mr Reid said the cannabis was found in a guest area of his home, and could have been there for up to 20 years. The discovery is thought to have been made several days ago, but was only made public today. The house is within Mr Reid’s former constituency of Hamilton North and Bellsill in Lanarkshire. After boundary changes last year he became MP for Airdrie and Shotts. Mr Reid was not in the house at the time it was found and was said by sources to have “no idea” how it got there.

Marijuana-like Compounds Suppress The Immune Response
Medical News Today - Apr 29, 2006
These findings, which appear in the May 5 issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, could have potential use in the development of novel anti-inflammatory drugs. The cannabinoids are a group of chemicals that include marijuana. These compounds bind to and activate the body’s cannabinoid receptors. There are two types of cannabinoid receptor: the peripheral cannabinoid receptor (CB2) which is predominantly found in immune cells, and the central cannabinoid receptor (CB1) which occurs in the central nervous system. Recent studies have suggested that CB2 may be involved in a wide range of physiologic phenomena related to immunity, although research on this function is still at an early stage. Among the possible immunological roles for CB2 is an involvement in the initiation of white blood cell migration to sites of infection and inflammation.
