Medical Marijuana, Pro and Con
New York Times – Apr 26, 2006
As the report stated, ”It is well recognized that Marinol’s oral route of administration hampers its effectiveness because of slow absorption. ” The report also found that ”except for the harms associated with smoking, the adverse effects of marijuana use are within the range of effects tolerated for other medications. ” And it did not find marijuana to be a gateway drug. ‘s announcement should not be surprising given its politicization in recent years.

The juror’s unauthorized contact on the eve of the verdict in January2003 was an “improper influence” that denied Rosenthal a trial before an impartial jury, the Ninth U. Circuit Court of Appeals said in a 3-0ruling granting him a new trial. “Jurors cannot fairly determine the outcome of a case if they believethey will face ‘trouble’ for a conclusion they reach as jurors,” said theopinion by Judge Betty Fletcher… “Jurors cannot fairly determine the outcome of a case if they believethey will face ‘trouble’ for a conclusion they reach as jurors,” said theopinion by Judge Betty Fletcher. “The threat of punishment works a coerciveinfluence on the jury’s independence. ”Rosenthal, a magazine columnist and author of books onmarijuana-growing who is known as the “Guru of Ganja,” was convicted of three felony charges in connection withplants he was growing in 2002 for patients served by the Harm ReductionCenter, a San Francisco dispensary. He faced a sentence of at least five years in prison under federallaw, but U. District Judge Charles Breyer gave him only a day in jail, finding unusual circumstances. Breyer said Rosenthal had believed, mistakenly but reasonably, that he was not violating federal law becauseOakland had named him an official agent in its drug program.

Legalizing marijuana
International Herald Tribune – Apr 26, 2006
Unlike alcohol, marijuana does not cause death by overdose, nor does it share the addictive properties of tobacco. Marijuana can be harmful if abused, but prison cells are inappropriate as health interventions and ineffective as deterrents. By raiding voter-approved medical marijuana providers in California, the very same Bush administration that claims illicit drug use funds terrorism is forcing cancer and AIDS patients into the hands of street dealers. Apparently marijuana prohibition is more important than protecting the United States from terrorism. Marijuana-like compounds suppress the immune response
EurekAlert – EurekAlert (press release) – Apr 26, 2006
These findings, which appear in the May 5 issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, could have potential use in the development of novel anti-inflammatory drugs. The cannabinoids are a group of chemicals that include marijuana. These compounds bind to and activate the body’s cannabinoid receptors. There are two types of cannabinoid receptor: the peripheral cannabinoid receptor (CB2) which is predominantly found in immune cells, and the central cannabinoid receptor (CB1) which occurs in the central nervous system. Recent studies have suggested that CB2 may be involved in a wide range of physiologic phenomena related to immunity, although research on this function is still at an early stage. Among the possible immunological roles for CB2 is an involvement in the initiation of white blood cell migration to sites of infection and inflammation.

(From University Wire) Byline: Kathleen Kane & Tia L. Napolitano The growing presence of drug delivery services in New York City has facilitated the flow of marijuana into New York University residence halls, according to a recent Washington Square News investigation. In an informal poll, on-campus marijuana users said having drugs delivered directly to their dorms is common and convenient — something campus security can do little to prevent, NYU officials said. “As soon as I moved to New York, I heard about it,” a Steinhardt junior said. “Pretty much everyone I know or hang out with closely uses delivery service at some point or another. ” A Drug Enforcement Administration official said several drug delivery rings are currently under investigation in New York City and that more cases of drug delivery services are surfacing in other major metropolitan areas. NYU students said drug delivery services are frequently utilized by campus residents.
