Medical marijuana focuses on right to life

Voters in 1996 made California the first state to authorize patients to use marijuana with a doctor’s recommendation. Ten other states have since followed suit. In 2001, the Supreme Court ruled that Raich’s supplier, the Oakland Cannabis Buyer’s Cooperative, could not lawfully dispense marijuana despite California voters approving its medical use. The court did not indicate when it would rule on a case that both sides expect would be appealed to the Supreme Court. The case is Raich v. Philadelphia — A burglary call at a house under renovation led to what might be the largest marijuana seizure in the city in more than 40 years. Police announced yesterday that they confiscated roughly 2,500 pounds of marijuana worth about $11. 6 million on the street. The seizure “was the biggest we’ve had in 42 years that we know of,” said Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson. Police responding to a 911 burglary call Saturday night at a home in West Philadelphia searched the premises and discovered 120 bales of pot in the basement, Inspector Aaron Horne said.
