In February last year Britt was stopped by police while driving his Mitsubishi Eclipse south on Cannon Boulevard as a result of Tim Miller’s knowledge that Britt’s driver’s license was suspended. Miller is an agent with the 17th Judicial Drug Task force and at the traffic stop he asked for permission to search the car. That led to the discovery of a pipe allegedly used to smoke marijuana and the officer filed a charge against Britt for having drug paraphernalia, and allegedly having marijuana in the pipe. Several plastic bags with a green leafy material were also found, leading to a charge that Britt had dope for sale, records show. At Britt’s home, however, more than 200 marijuana plants were found at “an indoor marijuana grow,” Britt’s arrest warrant states. He was indicted on a charge of manufacturing 100-499 marijuana plants. Prisoners’ drug and alcohol problems rage untreated

“At five, he was taken off them and went to live with his aunt and uncle. There were 15 people living with his aunt and uncle. “He began sniffing petrol and smoking cannabis at the age of 12 and says he got regular hidings from his aunt and uncle and started running away from them. He started drinking and began offending. “Eventually he was taken into Child, Youth and Family Services’ care and was placed in a series of foster homes. “From then on, no one in his family has wanted to have anything to do with him… “His father is an alcoholic, but he left when Matt was six weeks old. He has never met him. “He has a history of alcohol abuse, marijuana, and then P. ” Matt, 38, had held down jobs and had a 3-year-old son, but was estranged from the boy’s mother. He got a first chance to change six years ago when he was arrested on another charge and allowed to go to a residential treatment course. His friend went to his graduation. “It was great to see the change in his attitude and behaviour,” she says.

Police urge more drug-driver buses

Police Minister Tim Holding said the trial had been both successful and worrying. “It shows that more work needs to be done to ensure the message gets through,” he said. Drivers who test positive for cannabis and amphetamines face $307 fines and three demerit points.
