Narcotics charges possible after medical marijuana raids
San Francisco Chronicle – Dec 22, 2005
attorney’s office would not comment. Although medical marijuana growing and use was legalized by state voters in 1996, it is still against federal law. Steve Smith said Wednesday that he was in “constant fear” of being arrested and had been unable to sleep. The Smiths dispute the government’s report on the size of their growing operation, saying there were only 130 plants — not 500 — in their warehouse. They said the agents had also taken about $50,000 in cash from their residence. The club and affiliated cooperative, called Hope Northern California Net, has been hailed as a model business by city leaders and medical marijuana activists because its primary function is providing free or low-cost marijuana to terminally ill people… The Smiths said their business had expanded with the need for free or low-cost medicinal marijuana. The co-op has existed for six years, and the club has been open one year, Steve Smith said. The Smiths grew marijuana for patients, and other growers gave marijuana to the co-op to meet the need of the 100 core patients, who the Smiths said are near death. The 300 other people who receive low-cost marijuana through the club also have terminal diagnoses, Steve Smith said. People who go to the club and pay full price for marijuana subsidize the operation. If there is not enough marijuana for the terminal patients, the Smiths turn customers away, they said. They said they did not know if they received marijuana from the Penngrove growing operation, because they don’t keep records on who provides them with pot.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada lists numerous nutritional benefits of hemp as a food source: It contains more essential fatty acids than any other source, ranks second in complete proteins only to the soybean, and contains gamma linolenic acid, which has been found to have many properties ranging from anti-inflammatory to anti-depression, lowering cholesterol and helping to correct dyslexia, dyspraxia and hyperactivity (ADHD). The blossoming hemp industry has not been without its thorns, however. Hemp is a cousin of marijuana or cannabis sativa, which contains the psychoactive ingredient Delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The Canadian government had followed the U. lead and banned the cultivation of anything containing THC, rendering the hemp industry illegal. But Fedorowich of PIHG explains: “Marijuana has at least two-per-cent THC, enabling one to get high on it, while industrial hemp contains only 0.
Marijuana and “ice” allegedly were brought into the federal…
Honolulu Star-Bulletin – Dec 22, 2005
comThree Hawaii inmates smuggled marijuana and crystal methamphetamine into the federal detention center with the help of a guard and family members, including two mothers, a wife and a brother, a federal grand jury alleges. In a superseding indictment filed yesterday, inmates Keoki Astronomo, Keoni Hylton and Robert Kupahu, along with Astronomo’s mother, Marlene, and Kupahu’s brother, John, are charged with one count each of conspiracy to possess and distribute crystal meth and marijuana and conspiracy to provide an inmate with a prohibited object. The two counts carry a maximum sentence of 45 years in prison. Robert Kupahu, Keoki Astronomo, Hylton and a fourth inmate, Edward Michael Ramos, have also been charged with possession of a prohibited object in prison. Kupahu and Astronomo allegedly had “controlled substances” and drug paraphernalia, while prosecutors alleged Hylton and Ramos were found with marijuana… Attorney Clare Connors, who is prosecuting the case. “It started when we found out about the marijuana on the first two inmates. Then, we found out about the way in which these. (drugs) were brought into the prison.

Their insights might also lead to drugs that could help increase — or curb — wayward appetites. The team of researchers at Columbia University in New York City didn’t focus on the drug itself, but rather on the body’s own version of pot’s principal ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol. Naturally produced cannabinoid molecules, called endocannabinoids, are drawn to the hypothalamus — a region of the brain that regulates hunger and other basic functions such as memory, perception and movement. Researchers have long known that once endocannabinoids dock with their brain receptors — known as CB1s — hunger ensues… This neural stimulation, in turn, ignites the need to feed. The authors also discovered that this endocannabinoid-induced hunger effect is tamped down by leptin: a naturally produced hormone previously associated with the long-term regulation of body weight. In sufficient amounts leptin short-circuits the cannabis docking process, maintaining a check on hunger by inhibiting the flow of calcium into the neurons, the researchers found. Leptin deficiency, on the other hand, seems to allow CB1 neuronal stimulation to continue unfettered for longer periods of time — time presumably spent raiding the fridge. “In mice we see that without the leptin signal, they become obese, because they have more endocannabinoids in the brain,” says study author Young-Hwan Jo, formerly of Columbia University’s Center for Neurobiology and Behavior, and currently with the department of medicine’s endocrinology division at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. Jo’s team believe the findings could lead to appetite-stimulating drugs that could help ill patients such as those battling cancer or AIDS. New insights into the mechanics of hunger may also point to novel targets for weight-loss drugs that could manipulate the body’s natural circuitry to control cravings.
