Marijuana worth $1.6m seized

6 million have been seized from a property in Sydney’s south west. Police raided the Hume Highway, Yagoona home about 7. 45am (AEST) yesterday and found 400 cannabis plants and an elaborate cultivation system, police said. A 45-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with cultivating a prohibited plant in excess of a commercial quantity. He was refused bail and was due in Burwood Local Court today. Here’s what happened, and what employers can do while waiting for the decision. Federally, marijuana cannot be prescribed or used… Supreme Court upheld the federal government’s right to enforce the Controlled Substances Act regardless of the laws in any state. Oregon permits certain individuals to use marijuana medically for conditions that defy other legal treatment. Although not intended to stand workplace substance abuse policies on their heads, that has happened. Oregon’s Medical Marijuana law says employers aren’t required to accommodate marijuana “in any workplace. ” But in Washburn, the Court of Appeals did not think it could stretch “in any workplace” to forbid an employee from using marijuana off the job, such as right before work. “In the workplace,” the Court thought, meant physically “in” it.

“Our population makes it difficult for growing marijuana,” Sheriff Carey Winders said Thursday. At the same time, Winders said, hunters are finding fewer open spaces, too. “In the isolated areas we do have, there are many hunters out there,” the sheriff said. Wayne County’s population has mushroomed to about 114,000, about double that of neighboring Duplin and Sampson counties, which are geographically much larger. Another factor in the reduction of marijuana fields has been the operation of the sheriff’s helicopter, the Raven, for six years. “Knowing that we have the helicopter and that we are out looking has deterred” marijuana production, the sheriff said. “We’re fortunate in that respect. Winders said his officers have found very little this year during their flights. They did fly a few days ago as the growing season was coming to an end.

The Palm Desert City Council voted last night to allow a clinic here to stay operational. The clinic in Palm Desert, on El Paseo, is one of two locations selling medicinal marijuana in Riverside County. Some local leaders wanted to ban the distribution of marijuana within city limits. But the council voted unanimously to study the issue further while allowing sales to continue. “We have a lot to lose,” said clinic owner Stacy Hochanedel. California is one of ten states to legalize medical marijuana, but the federal government says it's still illegal. In June, the US Supreme Court ruled the federal government can continue arresting people who use medical marijuana under state laws… But the council voted unanimously to study the issue further while allowing sales to continue. “We have a lot to lose,” said clinic owner Stacy Hochanedel. And 15 percent smoke marijuana to treat mood disorders.

She said she favors prison reform, states’ rights, abolition of gun control and a checkbox-style government along with the obvious drug policy reform. Nall said she decided to run in a conservative state such as Alabama because the state is dying for change.

DEA agents from the Pittsburgh office raided Maker’s residence. Poghen, Maker and Fawcett were taken into custody at the Strausbaugh Avenue location, described in court papers as a building housing indoor marijuana cultivation. Agents also found cultivated marijuana and firearms during a raid at Fawcett’s home, the government said… Lamplugh, in charge of the Youngstown office. In an affidavit, Boardman Sgt. Michael Hughes, a task force agent, said he obtained information that Fawcett was distributing large amounts of marijuana and that the operation was close to the pasta store. Hughes said Fawcett’s name turned up in a 2000 DEA marijuana case.
