New CHP policy now allows patients to carry medical marijuana

Supreme Court ruling in June that left intact a state law allowing the drug to be used for medicinal purposes. The policy change was a victory for medical marijuana advocates, namely the Oakland-based Americans for Safe Access, which sued the CHP and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger earlier this year to have the practice stopped. "Our hope is this will ripple around the state," she said…
Only about 180 cards were issued. Several cities and counties in the state started their own programs. San Francisco, for example, has about 8,000 registered cannabis users.

August 28, 2005SACRAMENTO – In the thick of California’s illegal marijuana harvest season, agents have seized 742,684 plants with an estimated street value of more than $2. 6 billion, already surpassing last year’s season total by 20 percent, authorities said. And the state Department of Justice’s annual Campaign Against Marijuana Planting, or CAMP, is still a month away from wrapping up operations after the season peak at the end of September. About three weeks ago, a grower was shot dead and a state Fish and Game warden was wounded during a raid on a 22,000-plant pot farm in the hills above Los Gatos. It was the fourth suspect to die in a marijuana raid shootout with authorities in the past three years and the first time a law enforcement officer has been shot in CAMP’s 22-year history.

Kirk Muse suggests that we should “regulate, control, and tax the sale and production of marijuana and sell it in licensed business establishments like we do with tobacco. ” I have to disagree. Is there really an option of controlling the distribution of marijuana? I don’t think I want my fellow teenagers driving under the influence of marijuana, as they do with alcohol. Putting an age limit on a drug or drink doesn’t control youth from getting hold of it. Legalizing marijuana for nonmedical purposes shows our youth that it’s OK to get high, once you’re old enough.
