Investigators have identified six people they believe are connected with the plants, the fifth big outdoor growing operation to be raided in the county this year, Harum said. In Yakima County authorities seized a total of 1,500 marijuana plants from seven growing operations that were found about five miles north of Wapato, 17 miles south of Toppenish, near Selah, near Cowiche and in the Wenas Valley north of Yakima. Those plants were spotted from six helicopters provided by the U. Drug Enforcement Agency, Washington National Guard and Chelan County sheriff’s office for a three-day training exercise in spotting marijuana from the air. The exercise was conducted for about two dozen police officers from around the state.

26 The Drug Policy Forum of Kansas has asked the Lawrence City Commission to move low-level drug cases from District Court to the less formal Municipal Court, saying the move would save court costs and prevent local college students from losing federal education aid over minor drug charges. Reaction from local officials has been mostly positive: the mayor and top county prosecutor support the move, and the city police chief said the proposal could have “great merit. “However, a spokesperson for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy slammed the proposal. “Marijuana is a great source of ignorance for many people,” said Rafael Lemaitre said. “They think that it’s a soft drug or harmless drug, that law enforcement is wasting its resources by prosecuting these cases. That’s not true. ” Lemaitre accused national drug-reform groups of being behind the Lawrence proposal. Bruce Beale, who directs an addiction treatment program called DCCCA in Lawrence, said he would not oppose moving drug cases into Municipal Court as long as the move didn’t remove the threat of punishment.

The public will pay. The employees of the criminal justice system will most likely be the only ones to gain. The Misuse of Drugs Act banned cannabis to try to stop or limit “recreational” use, surely not to enable the prosecution of medical suppliers and users? Many, including the House of Lords, have suggested some sort of immunity for those people, or some change in law, but our cloth-eared Government refuses to listen and they pass the problem back and forth between Parliament and the Courts. I believe we must stop these prosecutions. What can we do?Two things you can do right now: Firstly, it is for anyone on a Jury to understand that if they feel a law is not being correctly applied, despite the evidence and despite what anyone says, they are free to return a verdict of not guilty. Secondly, let the CPS, in this case in Cumbria, know that we do not feel these types of cases are in the public interest. You can do this by signing the on-line petition below, or writing to the address given there:.
