Get Sensible About Marijuana
Washington Post – Jun 24, 2005
Will ["This War Is Worth Fighting," op-ed, June 16], arresting thousands of people a day for the possession of narcotics is not sensible. Marijuana was made illegal in 1937. The federal law to ban it was based on faulty, often misleading and sometimes racist testimony. Some people at that time claimed that gangs of African Americans were smoking marijuana and raping white women because of it. Most people who use marijuana are otherwise law-abiding and able to make competent decisions about right and wrong. Marijuana has been part of human culture for thousands of years…

Some people at that time claimed that gangs of African Americans were smoking marijuana and raping white women because of it. Most people who use marijuana are otherwise law-abiding and able to make competent decisions about right and wrong. Marijuana has been part of human culture for thousands of years. The “war on drugs” is futile — just look at all the killings and underground activity that it has caused. The Post, for example, recently ran an article on how widespread drug-related crime is in Mexico ["More Than 600 Killed This Year Despite Aggressive Crackdown," front page, June 16]. Opponents say that if illicit drugs were legal, more of our kids would use them and be unable to function.

Other beneficial effects attributed to cannabis are prevention of insomnia, relief of anxiety, protection against cholera, alleviation of hunger and as an aid to concentration of attention. 1922 — The Narcotic Drug Import and Export Act is passed by U.

Brain’s Marijuana-like Compounds Help Delay Pain
ivanhoe.com – Jun 24, 2005
Scientists have long known injured athletes or even gunshot victims have a period of time in which the bodyâs pain reaction is delayed. This effect is called stress-induced analgesia. Researchers have now found marijuana-like chemicals called endocannabinoids play a key role in stress-induced analgesia. In addition, the researchers have developed a novel inhibitor molecule to boost the analgesic effect of the compound most directly related to pain relief. When rats used in the study were given the compound developed by the researchers, it increased stress-induced analgesia dramatically, providing the connection between pain suppression and the release of the marijuana-like compounds. âThis study shows for the first time natural marijuana-like chemicals in the brain have a link to pain suppression,â says study author Daniele Piomelli. This new work may completely bypass current arguments over the use of medical marijuana. In theory, the research could lead to development of a new drug that has the same pain-relieving effect as smoked marijuana, without the unwanted side effects. âA drug derived from the new research would likely be more effective and specific than smoked marijuana,â says researcher Andrea Hohmann.
